BioCity Scotland secures future for MSD Newhouse site

January 20, 2012: BioCity Scotland Ltd, a joint venture between BioCity Nottingham and Roslin BioCentre, has acquired the former MSD research facility at Newhouse in Lanarkshire. The facility will provide a dedicated base in central Scotland for growing bioscience, pharmaceutical, med tech and health care companies.

The presentation of the site by MSD (Merck & Co in the USA and Canada) to BioCity Scotland makes available more than 130,000 sq ft of purpose-built laboratories on a 23-acre site capable of supporting preclinical drug discovery and development. The rejuvenated site will complement the existing provision of space for life science companies in Scotland by catering for start-up and growing companies requiring a central base near both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In addition to more than 130,000 sq ft of fully-fitted laboratory and office space, BioCity Scotland provides access to a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment available to rent. This includes high-throughput screening, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometers, HPLCs, electrophysiology and cell culture suites, centrifuges and freezers. A compound management system and a library of 100,000 compounds is also part of the offering. On-site business support and funding opportunities will also be available.
